Largest and most complex of musical instruments, the organ has traditionally been found in churches—from country parishes to great cathedrals—and, for centuries, small “chamber organs” were found in the homes of the elite, most often, royalty. Then, in the mid-19th century, with the application of mechanical blowing devices, organs entered the private homes of the well-to-do and professional musicians. Automatic player devices provided those who could afford them with a self-playing organ and the opulent mansions of the new American aristocracy offered unlimited space for extremely large instruments. Rollin Smith’s Pipe Organs of the Rich and Famous is the story of organs in more than 50 private homes—a few residents being more famous than rich. It recounts a time when the organ was not only a symbol of those who had arrived socially, but was considered the ultimate appointment of the luxurious home, indeed, the Home Orchestra of the Twentieth Century. Here you will visit with royalty, captains of industry, famous organists and composers, organbuilders, and those whose names are less familiar, but who were patrons of the King of Instruments on a lavish scale. Profusely illustrated with more than 300 photographs and engravings, this large-format soft-bound book documents the work of more than 25 organbuilders in the United States, England, France, and Germany; stoplists of each instrument is included.

Pipe Organs of the Rich and Famous Rollin Smith Len Levasseur 9781494966065 Books Reviews

A good reference for the organ enthusiast. My go-to book on pipe organs covers the important organs we can see in Chicago. Pipe Organs of Chicago To appreciate these fine instruments, you must be half architect, half historian, and half artist.
This book is a tour de force for pipe organ historians, but it is also a fascinating window on the robber barons, princes, maharajas, and prominent composers in an era mostly before radio, recordings, or income tax, when the rich and famous spent evenings at home with musical entertainments. Henry Clay Frick even had his own in-house organist!
The book is not a comprehensive compilation of the hundreds of residence pipe organs built from the late 1800s into the 1930s, but it is a representative selection of them with engaging archival black-and-white photographs of the over-the-top interiors (and exteriors) of the owners' mansions, automobiles, and fashions. Missing are the stunning home organs in Scotty's Castle at Death Valley, Henry Flagler's White Hall and James Deering's Vizcaya in Florida, but these omissions do not detract from the overall enjoyment of this splendid book.
For each instrument included, a complete stop list is given, as well as the original maker and cost, and the present disposition of these grand old music machines. Only a very few survive in working order today. Perhaps this volume indicates a renewed interest in preserving them. The long-planned Skinner organ for George Vanderbilt's Biltmore was not installed until 1998! The book includes 483 illustrations and 13 appendixes of archival literature.
It should be noted that the reviewer was one of the hundreds of pre-publication donors to this unique book; the results far surpass expectations.
A quality book of an age gone by. Enjoy the houses profiled and can only imagine what those days were like.
