A Field of Red Frank Harper Mysteries Book 1 edition by Greg Enslen Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This was definitely one of the better mysteries I have read. It is the story of the kidnapping of two young girls in a small town in Ohio. The police are aided by an out-of-state visitor, a retired New Orleans police detective who specialized in kidnappings. He has been working part-time on cold cases in Alabama and has come to the town to try to make amends to his grown daughter whom he has not seen since she was roughy the age of the victims. He has no desire for any involvement in any aspect of the case but is eventually drawn in by his daughter's question of what he would do if the child was her young son. The main character, the retired police officer, is developed enough that he was not only believable, I found myself wishing the author had written other books featuring him, and perhaps even using other characters in the town. Although it appears he has not done so, I will definitely be on the lookout for his other mysteries.
I'm a proofreader/copy editor, so if there are too many goofs I get pulled out of the story and it's hard for me to take it seriously after that. This story had some goofs (St. Bartholomew's Hospital one place, Church in another; Glenda King in one spot, but Glenda Martin in another, dropped or wrong words, etc.), but it was a good enough story that I wanted to keep going. I cared about Frank Harper and wanted to know how things would turn out for him. I think there were some loose ends that didn't get tidied away, and maybe they'll show up in a sequel.

What I liked about the story is that it's definitely a police procedural, but told from a mostly outsider's POV, since Frank is no longer a cop, but used to be. So, you get the step by step process. I really liked how the author would dip into one of the victim's POV occasionally, but he only dipped into that one victim's point of view (there were two). I kept waiting to see what the other victim was thinking, but never got it.

But on the whole it was a good story.
This was a book I bought at a discount, but would have been worth the full retail price. I read a lot of book, and the mediocre and poor ones are soon forgotten. Months later I still remember this book in great detail. The author did a magnificent job of creating a tragic hero and giving him an opportunity for redemption. Frank Harper really struggles with his past, his alcoholism, and his desire to reconnect with his daughter. More of a gritty character study than a mystery or thriller. This book is going into the stack of books that might get reread again.
The main character is a man with a troubling past and an iffy future. He definitely redeemed himself by the end. The mystery (who done it) threw me for sure. Well developed characters with rough or emotionally tough pasts and some with good futures. I had a good chuckle over the ending. This book was free and I do recommend this author. He also writes other genres. Try it and see if you can guess who all the bad guys/gals are. I couldn't this time.
“A Field of Red” is a mystery/thriller. Two young girls, one the daughter of a town councilman, have been kidnapped in broad daylight, just a block from their school. Frank Harper is a down-on-his luck, retired police officer, in town to try and reconcile with his estranged daughter. Chief King is the local police chief whose force is overwhelmed by the kidnapping. When Chief King learns that Harper is in town he seeks his assistance in finding the two girls because of Harper’s experience with kidnappings. But Frank is a drunk and extremely reluctant to get involved. Eventually the promise of a reward convinces him to help as a consultant.

This story is full of twists and turns, and the ending will definitely surprise. I really enjoyed this story because of the complexity of the mystery but more importantly for the way the author portrayed Frank Harper and his struggles. I could feel Frank’s desperation about his relationship with his daughter and his growing realization of his alcohol problem. The relationships in this book were quite touching and not just an afterthought, something you don’t always get in mystery/crime story. I would definitely recommend this book for readers of mystery and crime fiction. Thumbs up to Greg Enslen for this engaging story.
For me this was an excellent book. Frank Harper was retired and he was so happy to be busy
Again, like so many of us who are retired, lonely and lost. There were times in the book when
I laughed out loud but times I cried. I read a lot of books and this book certainly will
Keep you turning, the pages. I highly recommend this book.
When I first thought about a review of this book I would have given four or more stars. Then I realized that I had noticed all along that the author had clearly tipped who the baddest of the bad guys was in the very earliest pages the book. He even provided his first name and almost underlined what his job was. Then, during the course of the book, he introduced a character who was so highly thought of by all concerned that he was a little too good to be true. The fact that his first name was never mentioned until the very end of the book immediately stuck in my mind as conspicuous. Early on I was about 90% certain he would turn out to be revealed as the primary evil mastermind. But I willingly suspended disbelief and plowed on through the story, hoping, I think, that author would be fooling me and would pull off a truly surprising ending. He didn't. Apart from that, it wasn't a bad tale and it was otherwise well written in most respects. As seems to be usual with books, it had the usual too many errors that should have been caught by a good proofreader. (Why is that?) Also his protagonist, Frank Harper seemed to be a little cement-headed and some of his actions seemed surprisingly foolish for a supposedly well-trained retired police officer. There was also too much environmental descriptive filler that didn't do a thing to advance or support the story. All in all, not bad, but ultimately promise in need of polish. I'll read more Enslen to see how he develops..
