The first two Inspector Maclean novels were brilliantly plotted page-turners. The third shows Rudlin moving into an even higher gear with a fascinating story that involves breathtaking skullduggery and races to a stunning conclusion.Diamonds feature in the plot again but are far from center stage. The focus this time is on the murder in London of a female Chinese movie megastar, which takes Inspector Maclean and his team to Hong Kong and Beijing – and allows Rudlin to demonstrate an extraordinary knowledge of China’s history, the brutality of its politics and the glories of its cuisine.
The best news of all for Rudlin followers may be the arrival on Maclean’s team of Chinese Sally Chan, transferred from the London Vice Squad to join Maclean and his sidekick Thomas.
In his Acknowledgements at the end of the book, Rudlin humorously notes “Hollywood’s ongoing inability to reach me by phone or email.”
Given the combination of the wily veteran Maclean, the maturing and tech-savvy Thomas and the seductive Sally, it may not be long before someone in Tinseltown picks up the phone.

Third in the Inspector McLean series, each book gets better than the last, and they started at a high point too.
This time the action swings between London and Beijing, via Hong Kong. The Peking Duck had me salivating as well!
Dear author, don't stop writing, this series deserves at least another dozen volumes. I sincerely hope the TV or film studios are reading them to. You have created a winner.

It is refreshing to read a good story that is linked to various cultural differences
So again this author has informed and entertained all the while providing an awareness of day to day differences between countries and their politics
3 books into this writer and series....and I can't get enough.
David knows his stuff...diamonds, travel, food, relationships, mystery, romance....

Intrigue, twist, and more than just a plot. In the style of the BBC series such
as Inspector Morse or Frost. Compelling to the point that you don't stop
reading until the end, and then search for the next in the series.
This, the third of the McLean novels, is the best so far. It's a more settled story, mostly in London and Hong Kong, with strong plotting and as usual, strong characters. I most like these novels for the 'zingey' dialogue which is witty and snappy stopping just short of acerbic. The introduction of the Sally character adds further dimension both to the colour of the story and to the dialogue...I hope we hear more from her. It's another winner from David Rudlin with the prose flowing smoothly off the pen to make it into a genuine page turner. A newish author in top form.
